Care & Installation Guide
Preserve the character of handmade Zellige
Moroccan Zellige celebrates variation. Differences in tone, surface texture and hand-chiseled edges are part of its handmade character. Thoughtful preparation and installation help these individual qualities come together in a balanced composition.
This guide provides general care and planning advice, not a product-specific installation specification. Use an experienced tile installer and confirm the suitability of your chosen tile, installation system and care products before work begins.
Inspect and blend before fixing
Unpack and inspect your tiles before installation. Dry-lay a representative area and blend tiles from several boxes to distribute lighter and darker tones naturally. Review the arrangement in the room's lighting before fixing. Set aside any tiles that concern you and contact us before installing them.
Prepare the installation
Have your installer assess the substrate, adhesive, movement joints and any waterproofing requirements for the intended setting. Tile and grout are not a substitute for a waterproofing system. Confirm suitability separately for showers, exterior areas, floors and other demanding applications; do not infer performance from inspiration images.
Choose grout with care
Choose a grout approved for your tile finish and application. A closely coordinated shade creates a quieter composition, while a contrasting grout emphasizes the grid and irregular edges. Strong pigments and abrasive grout can mark some finishes, so test your selected grout on spare tiles or a small mock-up first.
Ask your installer to confirm joint spacing rather than assuming handmade tiles should be installed without joints. Follow the grout manufacturer's application and cleaning instructions, working in manageable areas and removing residue within the recommended time.
Sealing: assess the finish first
Do not assume every glazed Zellige tile needs the same sealer. The glazed face, exposed clay edges and grout may have different requirements. Crackled or otherwise absorbent finishes may also require particular treatment.
Before sealing, obtain guidance for the exact tile and installation. Use only a compatible product recommended for that finish and test it on spare tiles, checking for color changes, residue or changes in sheen. Apply before or after grouting only as directed by the tile, grout and sealer suppliers. Follow their instructions for drying, curing and future reapplication.
Everyday cleaning
Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner suitable for glazed tile and grout. Rinse away residue and dry with a soft cloth where practical. Wipe spills promptly. Avoid abrasive pads, acidic descalers and aggressive cleaning chemicals unless specifically approved for your finish.
Before your first clean or use
Allow adhesives, grout and any sealer to cure for the periods specified by their manufacturers. Keep a record of the products used so future cleaning and maintenance remain compatible with your installation.
